Twilight of the gurus

Twilight of the gurus, Schumpeter, The Economist, 25th April 2015

Pieces by Schumpeter in The Economist on management writers are usually thought provoking.  This week he suggests that the management guru industry has ground to a halt.  The same people make the top of the list of leading thinkers in business in 2013 and 2011, and many recent publications are new editions of existing texts, including Red Ocean Traps by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne which we reviewed in March.

The rise of emerging markets led to a host of Indian gurus, of whom CK Prahalad is the best known.  There have not, so far been any from China.

We do wonder about the composition of the list which is comprised by voting on the Thinkers 50 website.  Clayton Christensen was the number one thinker in 2013 and 2011.  For our money Constantinos Markides, of London Business School, is a better thinker on innovation and he does not appear on either the 2013 or 2011 lists at all.

The organisation who compiles this list every 2 years is based in the USA so there may be an American bias.
We would be interested for readers of the blog to share their views of the most interesting business thinkers.
